Hong Gil-dong is a famous Korean folk hero, often compared to Robin Hood. His story comes from a 17th-century novel, The Tale of Hong Gil-dong (홍길동전), written by Heo Gyun.
Hong Gil-dong’s mother was originally a female servant (몸종, mom-jong), which made his status even lower. Since Joseon society was strictly hierarchical, children born to noblemen and concubines already faced discrimination, but those born to a nobleman and a servant were treated even worse.
Because of this, Hong Gil-dong was considered an illegitimate child of the lowest rank (얼자, eol-ja), meaning he had even fewer rights than typical secondary sons (서얼, seo-eol). He couldn’t inherit his father’s status, hold government positions, or even be properly acknowledged by his family.
This was why he wasn’t allowed to call his father ‘father’.
His frustration with these rigid class restrictions was what drove him to leave and become a legendary outlaw fighting for justice.
