I want to break your immersion a bit to whinge about something OTL
I wish Korean authors would stop emphasising about the difference between polite speech (jondaemal ) and casual speech (banmal) when writing this kind of fiction. Granted, there are certain European languages with some similiarity (French, German, and Spanish to name a few) but it isn’t IMO to the extent where it is being emphasised like this in FICTIONAL WRITING.
This is especially painful to translate to and differentiate in English. There really isn’t much guidance regarding this either in translation textbooks that ‘s focused on Korean to English.
I even debated to fuck all and not translate this part, but then that wouldn’t be right, cause I’d be omitting context. I’m saying something here cause this part feels massively awkward to me and I’m terribly dissatisfied with it.
Edit: I realised why this was grating on me, because the BL I’m commissioned to translate uses this as a trope and it gets brought up so goddamn often, I’m like…
The feeling when you’re translating something you absolute have no feelings for, but is just doing it for the money LOL
Don’t worry though, everything I translate here are all the things I love ^^ (I just in general hate the weak, pathetic, self-blaming type… if you noticed, I tend to 100% pick novels with strong heroines (at least sassy and clapback) not the whinge, whinge, crybaby, look at me i’m so helpless type… ugh
